Rhys Millen tears around the track in his Hyundai Veloster during Sunday's competition.
Red Bull Global Rallycross visited the Port of LA for not one, but two, races during Sept. 19 through 21. Scott Speed drove his VW Polo to victory on Saturday and Rhys Millen took first place on Sunday in his Hyundai Veloster.
Ken Block, the championship points leader after Los Angeles and fan favorite, earned podiums both days, placing third on Saturday and second on Sunday.
The back-to-back race schedule presented a unique challenge for drivers, Block said.
“It's one of those cases that you can't take too much risk and damage the car and be out like Nelson did [on Saturday] with the DNF. So just one incident like that and one of us could be out of the title race, so it's a fine line to play with.”
Rhys Millen, Sunday’s winner, sitting 10th in points after the weekend’s races, credits the support the team has received from Hyundai as the force behind the improvement.
“Last couple of years we'd only been running one car, with support from [Hyundai], this year we have two cars, so really, to sum it up, it's testing, we've had time to go to the events not only to compete for the short period of time that you're in the weekend, but to go there a week early and actually develop the car,” Millen said. “The car is essentially the same, outside of four shock absorbers and just taking things off and putting them back on in a different combination, we found that combination in Charlotte. [...] So, really it's just hard work and sweat that's got the car running fast.”
